This is a project co-conceived with our friends at Rivendell Bicycle Works. They stopped making their luscious tandem about 3 years ago, but the same situation that encouraged them to design their HubbuHubbuH in the first place still exists. As they saw it--" There's a gap to be filled in the tandem market; the nicely made ones are generally for competitive or otherwise "serious" riding, and the more casual ones are either ugly, shoddily made or both.."

The It Takes Two is a thoughtfully built, rock-solid, confidence-inspiring tandem that’s made for pure fun—whether that’s ripping around with friends or convincing your demure twin sister to jump on and ride shotgun. Plenty capable for casual dirt trails, light touring, and even bikecamping, but where it really shines is in those everyday adventures: spinning down bike paths, carving through the park, or rolling out to grab coffee or lunch.

The geometry is very close to the HubbuHubbuH with relaxed seat tube angle and long cockpit designed for upright backswept bars.

The frame has more bracing than a lot of tandems to keep it torsionally strong and stiff.

Sloping top tube allows for easier fitting for a range of heights, especially in the back.

Just hop on and cruise. It is the closest thing to a Buick on two wheels.

- Oversized ovalize chromoly steel tubing, flared wider at ends that receive the most stress.

- Bi-plane style lugged crown CrMo steel fork included. Fork has braze-ons for mini rack and fenders

- Waterbottle boss sets: 4

- Fender mounts; double eyelets at the fork and rear dropouts

- Designed for V-brakes; disc brake mount at rear can be used to install a drag brake

- Kickstand plate

- Eccentric bottom bracket included (needed to tension the timing chain)

- Headtube size: 1-1/8"  (fits EC34/28.6|EC34/30 headsets)

- Seat post size: 29.8mm

- Max. tire clearance: 27.5 x 2.5" tires (2.1" recommended)

- Hub spacing: 100, 145mm (For QR hubs)

- Front derailleur clamp: 31.8mm

- Two sizes: Small and Medium

- Paint: Tiburon Blue

The Small fits captains with PBHs (Pubic bone heights) up to 91cm, and the medium fits up to 97cm. The captain's saddle height shown below is 86cm. The forks come super long 350mm steerer, but you can cut them down to fit. Leave more steerer than you think you'll need, just in case. Get the captain fit right and the stoker will fall into place. The taller rider should always go in front, since that determines how high the stoker bars can be. The minimum saddle height for the Small is 55cm, and 59cm for the Medium, so even the Medium will fit short legged stokers. If both riders have similar leg lengths, make sure to get bars with a lot of rise for the stoker. That's probably a good idea all the time actually, since you can always slide the stoker stem down the captain's seatpost.

Standover heights: Small: Capt: 79cm, Stoker: 62.5cm Medium: Capt.: 83cm Stoker: 66.5cm

SPECIFICATIONS

Front mini rack & fender mounts; double eyelets at the fork and rear dropouts.
Tandem specific or disc brake-specific rear racks recommended. You will need P-clamps, if you want to run a rear rack

- Designed for V-brakes; the disc brake mount at rear can be used for a drag brake, guides are for cables only, not hydraulic. If you want to run hydraulic or full housing, you would need Jagwire Cable Grips. But we think bare cables look cleaner on a tandem.

You can build it up as you wish, but if you are unfamiliar with building up a tandem, these will help get you going.
At launch we will be recommending you check out www.rivbike.com to look at their tandem parts which are perfect the our tandem.
Eventually we will be adding cranksets and other tandem options to our shop section.

Cranks gearing suggestions: Shifting rings: Touring or old MTB triples (44-34-24t), Timing ring: 38 or 36t, rear cassette: 11-36t

Chain length: The timing chains needs about 150 links.
The drive chain lengths will vary with gearing, but with the Rivendell's SILVER tandem triple (44-34-24) and a 36t rear cog, you'll want approximately 122 links, or 154cm of chain plus a master link. Your shop will be happy to sell you three chains to do this-all with.

Handlebars: The top tubes are fairly lengthy for a road/cruiser tandem. Because of that recommend bars that sweep back like the Nitto Albatross even if you don't want to sit super-upright. Having some rise like the Nitto Bosco can work great.

Stoker stem: Nitto Stoker Stem from Rivendell (Santana and other brands make stokers stems (some with telescoping lengths) that fit 29.8mm posts. They usually have an uptilted angle that can help if the captain's saddle height is kind of low and you need the bar up higher.

Seatpost: Nitto Tandem Seatpost from Rivendell: 300mm for the captain where the seattubes are longer and a 400mm for the stokers.

Wheels: 27.5(650b) MTB wheels with at least 36 spokes. The weakest point of a tandem is usually the rear wheel, so often rear tandem wheels have 40 spokes. Rivendell sells sets built with US-made Velocity Cliffhanger rims.

Auxiliary Rear Disc Brake: The frame fits 2 V-brakes for stopping. You can also install a rear disc to use as a drag brake, if you intend to do a lot of descending. Disc brakes usually have more modulation than V-brakes. As with everything else, you need tandem length cables or hydraulic line.
